Embarking on a New Journey
Three years ago, I made the brave decision to move to the South of France with my beloved Toby. I was giving up a huge amount with quite a large set of friends and spending a lot of time, not only working as a hospital social worker with a good salary but creating empowering events that brought communities together. It was a difficult decision to give all this up and move somewhere that lacked community for me. However, my mental health was poor; my nervous system had taken a bashing from the many years of social work, along with neglecting some unhealed parts of me. So, actually I was burnt-out and couldn’t go on the way I was.
A Healing Bond with Nature
The year I met Toby in 2016, I studied something called eco-psychology and already began to use some of its practices, like sit-spots, tuning into nature with its gentle guidance, so when I moved here I was so happy to be able to apply it into daily practice in the woodland. I cannot express how profoundly healing the woodland has been for me. I have some very good friends in there amongst those trees.
Sleeping Under the Stars
What has been the most incredible aspect of connecting to the land more intimately is sleeping with it. It’s as romantic as it sounds. I do it as much as possible by either staying awake all night during a vision quest ceremony or I’ve decided to sleep out if something has been weighing on my mind, so in a hammock between trees or in one of the cozy bell tents. Sleeping in the bell tent still gives you a wonderful experience, as the peaceful sounds of the nighttime wildlife can easily drop one into an alpha and theta wave state of relaxation. I think these experiences have done my nervous system the world of good and brought about some profound changes in my mental well-being when needed. I am by far a calmer, happier, grounded, and connected person. For me, it is the best medicine and easily attained by simply sleeping outdoors more.
Benefits of Sleeping Outdoors
1. Connection with Nature
Sleeping outdoors allows you to immerse yourself in the natural world. Being in nature can evoke feelings of awe, beauty, and serenity, fostering a sense of connection with the earth and its elements. This connection can bring a sense of calmness and grounding, reducing stress and anxiety.
2. Stress Reduction
Sleeping under the open sky can help reduce stress levels. The tranquil surroundings, fresh air, and the absence of typical urban distractions can promote relaxation, leading to a more restful sleep.
3. Improved Mood
Being in natural environments has been linked to improved mood and emotional well-being. Sleeping outside provides an opportunity to break away from the routine and experience a change of scenery, which can uplift the spirits, increase happiness, and alleviate feelings of boredom or monotony.
4. Sense of Freedom and Adventure
Sleeping outdoors can evoke a sense of adventure, exploration, and freedom. The experience of camping, for example, can bring a childlike joy and excitement, igniting a sense of playfulness and curiosity. This can have a positive impact on your emotional state and overall outlook on life.
5. Resetting Circadian Rhythm
Exposure to natural light and the absence of artificial lighting during nighttime can help regulate your body’s internal clock, known as the circadian rhythm. This can improve sleep quality, enhance mood, and increase energy levels during the day, contributing to emotional well-being.
6. Mindfulness and Reflection
Sleeping outside can encourage mindfulness and introspection. The peacefulness and simplicity of nature can create a conducive environment for introspective thoughts, self-reflection, and a deeper connection with oneself. This can promote personal growth, self-awareness, and emotional clarity.
7. Sense of Awe and Inspiration
Sleeping under a starry sky or waking up to a beautiful sunrise can evoke a sense of awe and wonder. Such experiences can inspire a sense of gratitude, expand your perspective, and foster a greater appreciation for the natural world. These positive emotions can contribute to overall emotional well-being.
